Workload:
Workload of student for successfully completing the course. Each ECTS credit represents 30 working hours. These are the combined effort of face-to-face time, post-processing the subject of the lecture, exercises and preparation for the exam.

The total workload is distributed on the semester (01.04.-30.09. during the summer term, 01.10.-31.03. during the winter term).
60 class hours (= 45 clock hours) over a 15-week period.
The total student study time is 150 hours (equivalent to 5 ECTS credits).
There are therefore 105 hours available for class preparation and follow-up work and exam preparation.

Learning outcomes:
Subarea: "Logistics Services and Markets"
 
After successfully completing this module, students will be able to:
 
- explain the structure of the German logistics market and the role of its key players,
- assess the advantages and disadvantages of the various modes of transport,
 
- describe the services offered by shipping companies and freight carriers of various modes of transport,
 
- calculate the freight price for an exemplary road transport,
 
- describe the services offered by shipping companies and freight carriers of various modes of transport,
 
- make decisions regarding the outsourcing of logistics services.
Subarea: "Transport and Distribution Planning"
  
 
 
 
After successfully completing this module, students will be able to:
 
- explain Operations Research applications for decision support in transport and distribution logistics,
- develop mathematical models for simple transport and route planning problems,
 
- apply heuristic and exact methods to solve transport and route planning problems,
 
- work on case studies with the help of software tools and interpret their results economically.

  importance of air freight transport in the context of globalization
- The different carriers under consideration of environmental aspects  
  (contract logistics offers, CEP services offers, 4PL
  LLP concepts)
- Logistics from a marketing point of view
- Logistics services for customers
- Logistics services under environmental aspects
 
 
Subarea: Transport and Distribution Planning
  
- The classic transportation problem (CTP): definition, application and
  mathematical modelling
- Optimization approaches for the CTP: heuristic and accurate methods
- Special single-stage and multi-stage transport problems (e.g. transshipment
  problems) Modeling and solving problems with the help of standard optimization software
- The "Shortest Path" Problem: applications, modeling and solving problems with the help of
  Dijkstra´s algorithm
- The Warehouse Location Problem:
  applications, modeling and solving problems with the help of  
  standard optimization software
- The "Travelling Salesman" Problem: definition, applications, and solving problems using
  heuristic techniques (e.g. nearest
  neighbor, nearest insertion, farthest insertion, 2-opt)
- The classic route planning problem: definition, application and solving problems
  using heuristic techniques (e.g. savings method, route first cluster
  second heuristics, relocate method) and standard software
- Variations of the classic route planning problem (e.g. customer time window)

Teaching methods/Media:
Lecture and discussion in a large group using transparencies (projector) and the blackboard (theory and example calculations).
The submodule "Transport and Distribution Planning" will be supplemented by exercises. In order to support independent work a large number of exercise sheets covering the wide range topics in this module will be provided. Afterwards, the solutions will be discussed with the students.
Both the lecture notes and the exercise sheets will be available to students in electronic form.
In the subarea of "Logistics Services and Markets", complex practical problems in the form of exercises will be solved by the students and the solutions discussed in the lecture group.
